There is testable evidence that mass shootings are being caused by this essentially unknown avoidable mental event design engineers discovered, solved, and have prevented in offices for fifty years.  In offices it is a still-believed-harmless, experienced as a temporary, panicked episode of psychotic-like confusion. Depending on the severity, sometimes the episode has nonsense hallucinations.   So little is thought of this common problem everyone has that there is no research about it. (See my site.)

The office episode is believed harmless because it will spontaneously remit without treatment or after effects with appropriate rest from exposure when exposure stops.Typically a full recovery takes about a week scrupulously avoiding Subliminal Distraction.

Although since 1968 a multi-billion dollar industry has grown selling cubicles and Systems Furniture to prevent this "office worker" experience,  students, the public, mental health services and research are unaware this problem does or could exist.

In nine years searching I found only Dr. xxxxxxxx, Tufts University, who said he had seen the episodes from offices when he was in residency. Dismissive, he refused to reply for questions.  No one aware of this problem understands it is a problem of the physiology of human sight not offices.

This complicates knowledge of it because engineers and manufacturers treat the fact of the mental breaks as proprietary.  My first attempts to investigate were blocked.  There is a link to that encounter on my site where I was accused of being an attorney getting information for a suit. Chronic Subliminal Distraction from computer use without precautions for 'peripheral vision blocking protection' in homes or dorms with distracting movement around the concentrating student allows the mental event to repeat building in severity until the derangement necessary to commit suicide or kill innocents while acting out delusional beliefs is reached. 

This experience arises from a physical work situation requiring long hours of concentration which demands the long term consciously forced suppression of the vision startle reflex. (See My site for full explanation.) Subiminal Distraction

That situation can be replicated, optimized experimentally, to show the early psychiatric outcome of anxiety leading to depressive ideation long before the full mental event would strike with no warning.  (See "Warning"Link in my site introduction.) Warning

These shootings can be stopped with information, and student training.

Nothing else will work!!!

You warned schools and colleges. You had drills. Still Santa Fe happened!  Ten died!

With any precaution you implement shooters will change their attack method. They might force a school bus off the road. Shooters could attack with explosives, gasoline bombs,  at times of school opening or closing while students are in the open unprotected. Local or away games are high risk as well as unprotected students on PE fields. They can track police resource officer's habits and shoot them first.

You have the rare situation with the shooter alive to recount his daily activity, when and where he used his computer.   

Because Subliminal Distraction happens undetectably in the mind below thought reason, and consciousness, the shooter will not be aware of anything he did to create his depression and bizarre violent behavior.

Recent news released says he was a heavy video game player.  The content of the game is not important.  But where and under what circumstances he played is.

The stimulation of the amygdala during Subliminal Distraction can function as 'subliminal operant conditioning' to desensitize players of violent games.

Was there movement in peripheral vision where he played video games? How long were the computer sessions? How frequent were they?

Any activity which creates deep mental investment to the point that your brain is unaware of things happening around you is enough to allow Subliminal Distraction. The problem was discovered and solved before computers existed. For example, eyes open day dreaming is enough concentration to allow Subliminal Distraction.

Chronic Subliminal Distraction happens when someone forces the suppression of the vision startle reflex for many days in a location with distracting movement nearby in peripheral vision. This is not something that would happen without that exposure for long periods of time. It is NOT Mental illness. Even a severe  psychotic-like Subliminal Distraction episode will spontaneously remit with appropriate rest from exposure. (Typically a week or more.)

The physiology involved is explained in first-semester psychology although the mental break is rarely mentioned.

All my instructor said was, "Subliminal sight caused a problem in the early days of modern  office design."

It is not recognized as a current problem in psychology. For that reason you may have to insist that a psychology department investigate.

Subliminal Distraction does not create new thought.  The subliminal appreciation of threat begins to color thought and reason appearing to be the subject’s own decisions and emotions without outside influence. It is undetectable as it happens because of the way your brain deals with the vision startle reflex.  That oppressive threat in the mind below thought, reason, and consciousness will raise an issue or ongoing dispute, bullying, to pathological unbearable levels.

This demo tests the ability to suppress the vision startle reflex necessary for my successful experiment to cause depression.  Some cannot do that.  They are immune from Subliminal Distraction caused psychiatric symptoms. If the movement does not vanish, have someone else perform the demo and report what happened.
